BED SORES
Bed sores (also known as pressure sores, decubitus ullcers) – chiefly due to deprivation of oxygen & essential nutrients to an area because of prolonged pressure that occludes the blood supply to the tissue.

When a patient lies on a bed the weight of his body is transmitted to the bed through the points which are in contact with the bed, occiput, scapular, inter-scapular regions, sacrum & heels. The patient is prone to develop bed sores at these points.

A paraplegic or a quadriplegic is more prone to develop bed sores due to sensory & motor loss. Continuous pressure on bony points causes ischaemic necrosis which further aggravates the condition.
